John L. Blackwell has served as Honorary Consul for Malaysia since 2007. With a history of civic engagement in Oregon, Blackwell knows and is known by government and business leaders in Oregon, giving him the ability to represent the interests of Malaysia in the region. His direct connections to Malaysia have been through his professional forestry work in the native forests of Borneo. Too, he has assisted Malaysia in positioning its important export product, palm oil, as a sustainable crop on reclaimed agricultural lands. Blackwell assists Malaysian interests in Oregon and Washington with notary services and referrals to visa and passport services provided by the Malaysian consulate in Los Angeles. Blackwell served as dean of the Oregon Consular Corps in 2013, as treasurer from 2014 until 2017, and was elected vice-dean in 2018. Malaysia is consistently among Oregon top five trading partners, making Blackwell a strong advocate for open trade and peaceful borders.
